As I was brainstorming Thanksgiving related ideas for a Thanksgiving Break Art and Science Camp, my friend suggested making pumpkin batteries. I felt a jolt of creativity and …..

Eleven campers spent the morning exploring how to create circuits, if objects are insulators or conductors, and making pumpkin batteries. Pumpkin batteries aren’t very powerful, but they are pretty interesting! We also discovered that bigger pumpkins do not result in stronger currents.

What do you do with leftover pumpkins? Make Pumpkin Slime inside! Including using the seeds! As a person who loves messes, I was surprised that not everyone loved the mess as much as I did.

Those less interested in getting their hands messy preferred making popcorn kernels dance in a jar of water. Campers experimented with adding the vinegar and baking soda in different amounts and speeds.

We then used a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables for printmaking.

As students prepared to leave, they each used the trebuchet to launch one of the gourds or apples we had used for printing.
